An Open Letter to Advocate for Comprehensive Restructuring of Law Enforcement

Dear Local, State, and Federal Officials,

As a deeply invested resident of our community and a devoted citizen, I am writing to express serious concerns regarding our community's current law enforcement structure and advocate for substantial reform.

Research has demonstrated systemic issues within our law enforcement structure that necessitate thorough reform. A wealth of evidence, including a report from the [local source], indicates that our city has higher police-involved incidents and deaths than the national average. These findings suggest a clear need for systemic changes to our policing practices and policies.

Several paths exist to achieve a more equitable, just, and safe law enforcement structure. One recommendation is the implementation of community policing, a philosophy that fosters cooperation between law enforcement and communities and has been shown to improve relationships and reduce crime rates significantly.

Further, the incorporation of mandatory de-escalation training for all officers could lead to a decrease in violent interactions between police officers and civilians. We must also consider the role of mental health in policing; studies show that integrating mental health resources and social workers within the police force can lead to improved outcomes for individuals in crisis and reduced police use of force.

Funding priorities must also be reconsidered. With police departments consuming a significant portion of municipal budgets nationwide, there is a compelling case for reallocating some of these funds towards social services, which could more effectively address root causes of crime, such as poverty and lack of education.

I strongly urge you to support policies and legislation that enable these critical changes in our law enforcement structure. Please use your respective platforms to advocate for comprehensive police reform. Furthermore, I recommend that you facilitate town halls and other public forums on this issue to ensure community voices are heard and included in this vital conversation.

Thank you for your time and consideration of these urgent issues. I trust that you will acknowledge the necessity for change and act accordingly in the interest of our community.

Sincerely,

Michael R. Yearby
